Velichie (“Greatness”) is a far-right party that was founded in 2023 and entered parliament in June 2024 by a very narrow margin and subsequently remained there in November following a decision by the Supreme Court, despite receiving only 3.9 percent of the vote in the November elections.
Velichie has had a turbulent first period, marked by major internal conflicts and a series of defections in which MPs left the parliamentary group.
The party has primarily profiled itself on issues such as energy policy (opposition to wind power and support for nuclear energy), a referendum on adopting the euro, and the position that Bulgaria should not be drawn into the war in Ukraine.
Party leader Markov reportedly has a track record of Russophilia and opposition to supplying aid to Ukraine. Unlike V, however, Velichie supports Bulgaria remaining in both the EU and NATO. At the same time, Markov has made a series of statements in support of Russia and against providing assistance to Ukraine.
Morality, Unity, Honour (MECh) is the most recent far-right party to emerge in Bulgaria. The party was founded in 2024 by Radostin Vasilev, who had previously been a member of both ITN and PP. MECh entered parliament in the second election that same year with 4.4 percent of the vote, making it the seventh and second smallest party in parliament. MECh is the party closest to V. The party has primarily profiled itself on issues of crime control and opposition to the euro.
